Family Eligibility: Irish married couples and single women on a case by case basis. No more than 50 years between youngest parent and child.
Children Available: Infants, families should be open to a boy or a girl. Generally, children arrive home when they are 6 months old. Children have arrived home as young as 4 months and as old as 18 months.
Travel: Families should expect to travel two to three times to Mexico. The first trip is about 6 to 8 weeks in length. The second is about 2 to 4 weeks. Families may also choose to stay in Mexico throughout the process. Families should expect one 6 to 8 month trip in this case.
Time Frame: Wait time for families to be matched with birthmothers is currently very short. Families should expect a few weeks to two months for matches. For this reason homestudy ready families are preferable. After the dossier is in Mexican courts, the family has traveled to Mexico and after the birth of the child the process is approximately 6 to 8 months.
Medical Information: usually a 2 –3 page report of medical history on the birthmother, plus birthmother’s results on some medical tests, and a sonogram while she is pregnant.
Benefits: Families are able to travel soon after the child is born, can meet the birthmother, child is in foster care while family is not present, and the children generally arrive home younger than many adopted children. The lawyers we work with in Mexico are very experienced in adoption - one of our lawyers has over 20 years of international adoption experience. Our lawyers are very respected and connected in Mexico.
Issues: Like all court systems throughout the world the Mexican court systems can result in delays of the process and can be difficult on families. Understanding and flexibility with the process will help families
immensely.
Costs: $28,000, not including travel, housing, foster care, administrative fees for documentation, and translation of documents.
